Modifying a place to suit proposed compatible uses.

Axial
A layout, plan or design with an axis of symmetry.


Barbarism
Without culture or civilised standards.


Caparisoned
Horses' finery.

Cemetery
A place where the dead are buried.

Columbarium
A building with tiers of niches used for the reception of cinerary urns.

Connoisseurs
Expert judge on matters of tatse.

Consecrated
Dedicated for a religious purpose.

Conservation
All the processes of looking after a place so as to retain its 'cultural significance'. This includes maintenance and may, according to circumstance, include 'preservation', 'restoration', 'reconstruction' and 'adaptation'. It will often mean a combination of more than one of these.

Conservation Plan
A document setting out what is significant in a place and, therefore, what policies are appropriate to enable that significance to be retained in its future use and development.

Contentious
Argumentative.

Continuing Use of Graves
Continued use of graves by family members. It can include graves in cemeteries as well as private or family burial sites.

Cortege
Procession for a funeral.

Crematorium
A building in which corpses are cremated.

Crypt
A chamber or vault used as a burial place for multiple interments.

Cultural Significance
Aesthetic, historic, scientific or social value for past, present and future generations.

Curvilinear
A plan or design characterised by curved lines. 'Gardenesque' style usually has this sort of layout.


Deplorable
Exceedingly bad.

Denomination
Church or religious group.

Desecration
Violate a sacred place or thing.


Egress
Going out, or exit.

Enlightenment
An eighteenth century philosophical movement marked by a belief in human reason, often characterised by 'stoicism' towards grief and adversity.

Expedient
Advisable on practical rather than moral grounds.


Fabric
All the physical material of a place.

Fee Simple
Inherited property to any heir.

Felon
A person who has committed a crime.


Gardenesque
A landscape design style characterised by garden-like open spaces and often 'curvilinear' paths and plantings.

Gothic Revival
A nineteenth century revival of the mediaeval gothic style of architecture and art. It is characterised by asymmetry and steep verticality of structural and decorative elements such as pointed arches, spires and pitched roofs.

Grave Furniture
Ornamental items that are supplementary to the principal memorial on grave plots such as urns, vases and grave surrounds.

Grave Marker
Any object used to mark a grave site such as plaques, signs, rocks, timber crosses and monuments.

Grid
A design or pattern of regularly spaced horizontal and vertical lines crossed at right angles to each other.


Hallowed
Made Holy; set apart for God.

Heirarchical
A ranking system.


Immortelles
Funerary ornaments, usually in the form of a floral wreath or posy, made of ceramic and metal.

Indictment
A formal accusation.

Interment
Burial of a corpse.

Interpretation
An educational activity which aims to reveal meanings and relationships through the use of original objects, by first hand experience, and illustrative media, rather than by simply communicating factual information.


Limited Tenure
Limited tenure allows the 're-use of graves' after a specified period of time - identified by relevant state or territory legislation, where legislation exists. Graves can be re-used by unrelated persons.

Mortuary
Building in which dead bodies are kept before burial.


Necropolis
City of the dead; a large cemetery.

Neo-Classicism
An early nineteenth century style modelled on Ancient Greek and Roman art and literature. It is characterised by regularity, simplicity, balance and proportion of form.


Obituary
An account of the life of the deceased.


Preservation
Maintaining the 'fabric' of a place in its existing state and retarding further deterioration.

Protracted
Prolonged.


Reconstruction
Returning a place as nearly as possible to a known earlier state. This process is distinguished by the introduction of materials (new or old) into the 'fabric'. The process is not to be confused with either 're-creation' or 'conjectural reconstruction'.

Restoration
Returning the existing 'fabric' of a place to a known earlier state by removing accretions or by reassembling existing components without the introduction of new material.

Re-Use of Graves

An underground chamber for burial.

Boast.

Victorian
Of, or relating to, the period of the reign of Queen Victoria, 1837-1901.
