[ Voyage Details | Passenger List ]
The emigrant ship Simon Taylor sailed from London on April 30, 1842. She was under the command of Thomas Brown and arrived off Fremantle in the Swan River Colony 111 days later on August 20, 1842.
There were 242 passengers in all - 5 traveled in the cabins and the rest in steerage. Of those, 219 were assisted migrants and 18 were Parkhurst boys.
The 18 Parkhurst lads were convicted children from the Isle of Wight and by 1852 a further 316 had been sent to the Swan River and apprenticed to local settlers. Other boys were sent to Tasmania, New Zealand, Victoria and even Norfolk Island.
Jenny Brandis has a personal interest in the Backshall and Mortimer passengers
who travelled on the Simon Taylor and she has provided brief details of
both families below. She has also created two web pages which present a more
detailed account of the voyage with quotes from a newspaper of the day. Her
second page presents a timeline of the life of the Simon Taylor
including her physical description and building history. These pages can be
viewed at:
Jenny has also created a page to cover the 18 boys sent out under a
conditional pardon from Parkhurst Prison. She explains how the 13-16
year-old lads were treated as ordinary passengers and put under the care of
Samuel Caporn, a migrant who was travelling with his own extended family.
For further details on these lads and the Parkhurst Boys in general look at:
One of Jenny's sources was "Fate of the Artful Dodger: Parkhurst Boys Transported to Australia & NZ 1842-1852," by Paul Buddee. The book was published in 1984 and discusses the Parkhurst movement at length. Although Buddee later indicated that his text had its short comings, it still provides an invaluable background to the Parkhurst experience.
