[ Voyage Details | Passenger List | Crew List ]

The OTAGO was a 993 ton iron vessel. She was built in Glasgow in 1869, was owned by the Albion Shipping Co.Ltd. and in 1886 had G. Shenton acting as her colonial agent.

Newspaper accounts said she took 81 days to travel out from London and in his report, Captain Falconer said 318 passengers embarked at Plymouth. They left Plymouth, England on March 18, 1886 and arrived in Fremantle, Western Australia on June 4.

Dr Henry Cecil, the ship's surgeon, reported four deaths during the voyage and the birth of a son to Mrs Falconer, the captain's wife.

Miss Warren was the ship's matron and she looked after the single women during the voyage.

Passenger and crew lists appear further down the page but in the meantime, the following accounts from colonial newspapers of the day should provide an interesting insight into the voyage, the passengers and the manner in which they travelled.

Beverley Mackinlay has been the driving force behind this project and may have uncovered more information on the OTAGO's passengers and the family historians researching them. Cyber-tourists are encouraged to e-mail Beverley and any other researchers mentioned.

The 'West Australian' Monday, June 7, 1886.

A Visit to the OTAGO from our Fremantle Correspondent:

Hearing on Saturday morning that the OTAGO had arrived with her batch of three hundred odd migrants, it occurred to me your readers would be interested in a short account of the new arrivals, how they had enjoyed their voyage, whether they were so far satisfied with the step they had taken and whether that step was likely to be not only a gain to themselves but also to the colony at large. With this object in view, I determined to see them before they could acquire the slightest colonial experience and to be the very first on board.

With this object in view, I lost no time in waiting upon Dr Hope, the Health Officer and after explaining my mission, asked him for a seat in his boat; and here let me tender my acknowledgement to Dr Hope for the courtesy with which he acceded to my wish and for the trouble he took to put me in the way of gaining any information likely to be useful or of interest to your readers.

The police boat having aboard Dr Hope, Sub-Inspector Back and Cox-Wain Wood of the Water Police, put off for the ship about eleven in the fore-noon and we had not gone far before we could perceive the decks of the emigrant ship were crowded with expectant faces, doubtless anxious to have some news from the outside world after an isolation which had extended over 70 days.

A fair wind soon brought us alongside and the usual questions as to deaths, diseases and general health were quickly answered by Dr Cecil, the ship's surgeon. The general health of those on board was good. Whooping cough had in fact been somewhat prevalent and there were two patients in the hospital, one laid up with whooping cough and the other with rheumatic fever. Death unfortunately had not been absent, four of the migrants having died on the voyage out, but there had been no outbreak of any disease necessitating quarantine, so little time was lost before we were on board and surrounded by crowds of questioning voyagers.

I had fortunately bethought me of bringing bundles of back numbers of the 'West Australian', 'Western Mail' and some late files of English papers and I could soon see by the rapid way in which they disappeared and circulated among the passengers, that this roll of newspapers, giving them almost the first impressions of their new home, were most gladly received.

Immediately after boarding, Dr Hope proceeded to inspect all the immigrants in the usual way, the whole number passing before him one by one and thus providing an exceptionally good opportunity to obtain an idea as to what sort of people the new arrivals were.

The first to pass under the Doctor's searching eye were the single women. Judging by their good looks and comely forms, it would be surprising were they to remain under that heading for long; indeed, I venture to say that before many months are over, a goodly proportion will have formed more pleasing engagements than that of service.

Miss Warren, the matron, who has had a very extensive experience with emigrants, considered them a very fair sample. This lady has, of course, during the voyage, had exceptional means of judging the characters and capabilities of her charges, and through her courtesy, I am able to supply your readers with a list of girls who have been pre eminent on the voyage for tidiness, orderly conduct and general good behaviour. Of course, it must not be supposed for a moment that those who do not figure on the list are incompetent for their respective duties, but in every community, however small, there are some who outshine the rest and Miss Warren has simply furnished her list in the very natural hope that the most deserving girls will at once get good places. These are the names:

Bessie SEARLE, Elizabeth SMITH, Emily BRAY, Amelia WEBB, Annie SMITH, Lizzie STEWARD, Annie NICOL, Lydia JAMES, Agnes BURELL, Christina HAZLEWOOD, Minnie SULE, Emma CRAIN, Mary MILLER, Jane ROBERTS, Emma CASTLE, Kate SURTEES, Sarah BISSLE, Louisa ELLIOTT, Jane PORTER, Jane KIRKPATRICK, Mary Ann JONES, Isabelle ASCOTT, Ella CRAMMOND, Estor WALKER, Eva STEVENS, Bessie CURREY, Louisa JENNINGS,Fanny ALLEN.

Taking the single women as a whole, they seemed quite to bear out the favourable remarks Mrs Barles made concerning them, when she wrote some weeks ago a letter which appeared in the columns of this paper.

The next to appear before the doctor were the single men. Judging as one could only do by their personal appearance, there were some of them who certainly did not look as though they had been used to hard work, but these were in the minority, and while in respect of the majority, a mere cursory glance could give little reliable indication of their merits, there remained some who by their dress and appearance proclaimed themselves unmistakeably sons of toil and of the soil.

Among the married men there were some noticeable faces. Two especially attracted my attention, both of them genuine bucolics, both a little past the prime of life, but still perfectly able to do as good a day's work as any of the younger men. Their appearance was that of hard workers and their wives too seemed fit help-meets and I could not but think they would prove very valuable servants on a farm and perhaps before many years are over be employers of labour themselves.

After the examination was over, the police cutter lost no time in making for the shore and she was shortly followed by Mr Fothergill's steam launch which had brought aboard a small party consisting of Mr George [Shenton?] the agent for the vessel and one or two others. However, as I had not had time to mix much with the emigrants and as Dr Cecil very kindly offered to show me over the ship, with the permission of Captain Falconer, I decided to remain on board for a while and have a good look around.

Dr Cecil is a gentleman of very large experience with emigrants both black and white, having been no less than eleven voyages with Europeans under his charge, and six with coolies. Speaking of his passengers, he said he had 'seen some were worse ans some better, but altogether they were a very fair average lot.' To judge from his evident popularity among all sections, he had seemingly succeeded not only in making himself thoroughly respected but also very well liked.

The single women's quarters were the first shown to me, and it was impossible not to be struck with the cleanliness and order prevalent. They form part of what is the aft division of the saloon under ordinary circumstances, but which has been separated by a bulkhead, thus limiting the cabin accommodation, but on the other hand, affording complete isolation from the other emigrants. The quarters of the married couples are reached by descending the after hatch, and they extend beyond the main mast. A noticeable feature here were the moveable bulkheads which allow complete privacy for the separate families at night, but can be thrown open in the day time. The last division I visited was that of the single men, in which there was nothing noteworthy save the cleanliness so often neglected on these vessels when the voyage had ended and discipline has become somewhat relaxed.

After seeing the various quarters, there was still some time to elapse before Mr Fothergill's steam launch which was to bring Mr Habgood, the Emigration Agent alongside, should arrive. I certainly had come on board to obtain information but very soon saw that something was expected of me in return. Move where I would, a small crowd of questioners followed with queries as to wages, trade, house rent and the many numerous items that suggest themselves on arrival in a strange country.

In answer to my inquiries if they were satisfied with their treatment on board ( in which, bye-the-bye, Dr Cecil prompted them to speak their minds), I heard no serious complaints. There was a certain amount of growling about the salt beef and a very plainly expressed longing for beefsteaks and legs of mutton, but most persons who have had experience with sea travelling will know that such complaints are always common. When I ventured to point out to some of the grumblers that they could not expect to be brought out here for nothing and at the same time be fed on the very best of fare, my remark was greeted with good humoured laughter, a fact which would have gone very far to convince me of the general contentment of my audience, even if their healthy and well fed appearances had not already given me that impression.

About five in the afternoon, the steam launch appeared with Mr Habgood on board, who after a brief examination of the emigrants, returned on shore again, and I, thanks to Mr Fothergill, was enabled to accompany him.

Before concluding, it is a pleasure to acknowledge the courtesy of Captain Falconer, Dr Cecil and Miss Warren and indeed all on board with whom I made contact. One and all in their several degrees gave every information in their power and made what might have been a rather disagreeable duty, a very pleasant pleasure trip.

The 'Inquirer' Wednesday, June 9, 1886.

The barque, OTAGO, arrived on Friday after an exceptionally good passage of eighty one days from London. A favourable voyage had a not very successful termination, as, in making for Owen's Anchorage, she nearly grounded on the Parmelia Bank, at a spot just inside the Fish Rock, but was afterwards safely towed into deep water by the ss Perth. The OTAGO is a fine iron vessel of 993 tons and was built at Glasgow in 1869 for the Albion Shipping Co.Ltd. G. Shenton, agent.
