Hougoumont - arrived in WA in 1868 | SOURCES |
This 875 ton ship was built at Moulmein in 1852. It was employed as a convict transport for Western Australia and left London, England on October 12, 1867 bound for the Swan River Colony. She carried the last of 37 shipments of male convicts destined for Western Australia. The voyage took 89 days and the Hougoumont arrived in Fremantle on January 9, 1868 with 108 passengers and 279 convicts [Erickson]. William Cozens and W. Smith were the captain and surgeon respectively. The only death recorded on the convict shipping and description lists was for Thomas Cochrane (9689) and other sources say he died near Africa on the voyage out. There were 280 convict numbers assigned for the voyage ranging from (9644 to 9923) and this time [Bateson] agreed with the other sources and said that 280 convicts embarked and 279 arrived. George Cowper (9701) was also known as Martin Griffin (1324) who was convicted and sent to Western Australia on the William Jardine in 1852. He was originally granted a Ticket of Leave on February 10, 1852 and one source suggests that he subsequently escaped, but whatever, he was re-convicted in Winchester, England on February 27, 1866 for larceny. He was re-transported on the Hougoumont under his new alias and with a brand new convict number. Of the 108 passengers mentioned above, 87 were pensioner guards and their families, the number being made up of 44 pensioner guards, 18 wives, 10 sons and 15 daughters. The other 21 passengers have not been accounted for but were possibly cabin passengers or regular soldiers. Ian Richardson's first volume of the "Log of Logs" cites the titles and availabilty of numerous journals, diaries, letters and articles written about this last ever convict voyage from England to Australia. This voyage has gained even more repute over time as among its cargo of 280 convicts were a group of Irish political prisoners refered to as the "Fenians". They were all convicted for treason and some of them were military men who were court martialed for failing to report or stop the treason and mutinous acts of the others. Some were not definitely identified as Fenians in other sources and they have been given a "Fenian???" notation in the passenger list below. The following list is an alphabetically sorted list of the names associated with each of the 280 convict numbers assigned to this voyage. The comments field gives alternative names attributed to the various convicts, many of which are not only spelling variations, but alternative names used in later life or in subsequent re-convictions. The age quoted seems to refer to the age of the convict when he was taken to trial.
