Belgravia - arrived in WA in 1866 | SOURCES |
This 889 ton ship was built at Sunderland in 1862. It was employed as a convict transport for Western Australia and left Portland, England on April 7, 1866 bound for the Swan River Colony. She carried the thirty fourth of 37 shipments of male convicts destined for Western Australia. The voyage took 88 days and the Belgravia arrived in Fremantle on July 4, 1866 with 106 passengers and 275 convicts [Erickson]. John E.W. Jackson was the captain of the vessel. The two deaths recorded on the convict shipping and description lists were for Michael Egan (8841) and William Hamilton (8889) and other sources say they died on the voyage out. There were 277 convict numbers assigned for the voyage ranging from (8771 to 9047). The [Bateson] account for this voyage disagreed with the other sources claiming that 277 convicts embarked and 276 arrived. Joseph Rossiter (8978) was the same Joseph Rossiter (4867) who was convicted and sent to Western Australia on the Lord Raglan 1858. Apparently he was re-convicted in Gloucester, England on December 8, 1864 for being at large before the expiry of his sentence. He was re-shipped on this voyage with a new convict number. Of the 106 passengers mentioned above, 96 were pensioner guards and their families, the number being made up of 30 pensioner guards, 23 wives, 21 sons and 22 daughters. The other 10 passengers have not been accounted for but were possibly cabin passengers or regular soldiers. Ian Richardson's "Log of Logs" says a copy of a journal kept by William Irwin for the voyage is preserved in the Mitchell Library in Sydney, New South Wales. Researchers can only view the journal in Sydney, Australia. The following list is an alphabetically sorted list of the names associated with each of the 277 convict numbers assigned to this voyage. The comments field gives alternative names attributed to the various convicts, many of which are not only spelling variations, but alternative names used in later life or in subsequent re-convictions. The age quoted seems to refer to the age of the convict when he was taken to trial.
