Sultana - arrived in WA in 1859 | SOURCES |
This 775 ton ship was built at Sunderland in 1854. It was employed as a convict transport for Western Australia and left Plymouth, England on May 29, 1859 bound for the Swan River Colony. She carried the twenty second of 37 shipments of male convicts destined for Western Australia. The voyage took 82 days and the Sultana arrived in Fremantle on August 19, 1859 with 142 passengers and 224 convicts [Erickson]. Art Sharp and Henry Richardson were the captain and surgeon respectively. There were no deaths recorded on the convict shipping and description lists and 224 convict numbers were assigned for the voyage ranging from (5344 to 5567). Of the 142 passengers mentioned above, 121 were pensioner guards and their families, the number being made up of 50 pensioner guards, 31 wives, 17 sons and 23 daughters. The other 21 passengers have not been accounted for but were possibly cabin passengers or regular soldiers. A copy of Henry Richardson's surgeon's journal for the voyage is preserved in the Battye Library in Perth, Western Australia. Researchers can only view it in Perth. Fremantle Arts Centre Press included a transcription of the journal in its 1990 publication, A Pleasant Passage, [ISBN 0 949206 70 9]. The following list is an alphabetically sorted list of the names associated with each of the 224 convict numbers assigned to this voyage. The comments field gives alternative names attributed to the various convicts, many of which are not only spelling variations, but alternative names used in later life or in subsequent re-convictions. The age quoted seems to refer to the age of the convict when the passenger list was created.
